So in December you drank, quite a lot. The whole month is really just a blur of booze punctuated by bouts of eating so excessively that you wondered if you would ever be hungry again. So as we all waddle into January a little worse for wear and vowing to never let ourselves go again we at Brantlegh Waste thought we would add in a little more incentive to make the right choices for 2017. Not only is alcohol, when drunk to excess, full of wasteful calories as well as almost guaranteeing you will call/text/email someone you later regret, but it is pretty harmful for the environment.

  1. Allocation of resources

We clearly only have a finite amount of resources on this planet we call Earth. Devoting them to creating alcohol takes them away from important grains that could well be used to help feed the hungry. Not only, this but, of course, it also consumes a huge amount of energy – energy that we are in seriously short supply of.

  1. Waste management

Bottle and can waste accounts to a huge amount of waste on the planet – including 425 beverage containers per capital per year. In fact, in America beverage containers make up of 40-60% of roadside litter in non-deposit states. This can lead to the emission of harmful toxins into the air and water. These beverage containers can be harmful to both livestock and wildlife – either by stepping on the broken cans or by ingesting them accidentally.

  1. Toxic emissions

All alcohol comes in some form of packaging and those pesky cans can have a seriously harmful impact upon the environment. Whenever bauxite (the raw material that goes into your cans) is mined, around 50 tones of caustic red mud waste is produced along with a whole range of other pollutants which can have an extremely harmful impact upon our available soil.

  1. Greenhouse gases

Alcohol waste contributes to the annual generation of 4.5 million tons of greenhouse gases. It is estimated that in the UK 1.5% of greenhouse gas emissions are created by the production and consumption of alcohol. Purchasing bottled beer from a shop that has been extensively transported can be responsible for as much as 900g CO2e.

  1. Soil

For those of you who are partial to a shot of tequila this one may particularly shock you. The production of tequila is extremely water-intensive – for every gallon of tequila, there are 18 gallons of liquid waste. This waste is so acidic that when it is released it means the soil cannot be farmed. This is actually really quite shocking – and will have a particularly harmful impact upon the environment.
